who is kirby baby?

kirby baby is the latest chapter in the creative output of southern-born, brooklyn-based artist kirby brown. inside man, his debut record under this moniker, is a raw collection of lo-fi-meets-hi-fi indie rock. the record was recorded over 6 months in 2024 with producer dominic billet in a converted-garage studio in nashville, tn.

in the face of the hollow, costumed nostalgia of current “american” music, kirby baby sheds the polish and artifice in favor a more honest, sometimes bloody, expression of a “southern” person’s experience——one that isn’t reliant on overwrought tropes, one that doesn’t need a cowboy hat and a nudie suit to be accessible or resonant.

the songs on inside man are less like crafted narrative vignettes, and more like open-ended diary entries. they are a vulnerable, trenchant, and at times tongue-in cheek slog through the ins-and-outs of unrequited love, alienation, and the burnout that almost led him to give up altogether.

but in spite of the weight, there’s a pervasive sense of levity, too. kirby baby goes into territory that might too easily slide into melancholic self-indulgence, but meets it with an ironic, cock-eyed grin… one that’s willing to laugh at even the grave itself.
